The Living Room Indecision

The Living Room Indecision

Here’s the 2nd part update to my living room makeover. I posted here about my painting prep and here about my board and batten update in my entry way. It’s officially been two weeks since we finished painting, and I’m in love with the color and my “new” living room.

First let’s talk about the color. My living room has a tan couch, navy and white curtains and rug, and a blue chair. I was looking for a rich brown/grey/tan color that wasn’t too brown or too grey. I didn’t want a color with red undertones or a color that clashed with the grey color in the kitchen.

I don’t know how many paint samples I compared over and over and over, but I finally decided on Olympic’s “Indecision.” I bought a test pot and tried it out on the wall to see how it looked in the sunlight and with the lights in my house. You never know how a color is going to look in your house. Believe me, I’ve been through a number of test pots of paint!

I get a little nervous when I roll out the first coat of paint on the first wall in a room. It’s hard to imagine how a color will impact the whole room. Will it be too bold? Will it make the room look small? Will it overwhelm the space? Indecision has been the perfect color for the room, the stairwell, and upstairs hallway. It is truly living up to its name, because in some lights it looks more grey and in other light it looks more brown, but it has really improved the room.

You’ll notice in the update pictures I also rearranged the furniture in the room. As a kid, I loved when we rearranged my bedroom furniture, the kitchen, or the den. I enjoyed pushing all of the furniture to the middle of the room and then figuring out the puzzle of how to put the pieces back in a new way. A new configuration offers a new perspective on a room, it allows you to see a different side and opens your mind to new ideas. It offers a clean slate.

My friend first suggested putting my couch on the collage wall after viewing my preparation post, here. I had considered this before, but wasn’t sure if it would be awkward to watch TV from that angle, since the TV has to stay on the same wall. I scooted the TV cabinet down the wall closer to the light switch, to make TV watching comfortable. The blue chair moved from the collage wall to the windows.

After two weeks, I am a fan of the new layout. It makes the room feel more open, more put-together, and that the space is being used more appropriately. All I have to do is fill in this nook, and everything will be completed.

But I know, one step one project at a time! What do you think of the color and the new layout?
